Major uptake in gynaecomastia procedures reported

A dramatic rise in the number of men showing an interest in cosmetic surgery procedures has been seen all over the world, with New Zealand being the latest to report on the growing trend.

According to a new report carried out by The New Zealand Herald newspaper, men are now three times more likely to consider having a cosmetic procedure of some sort than women.

Traditionally, women have been by far the biggest customers when it comes to cosmetic procedures, with facelifts, liposuction, rhinoplasty and breast augmentations and lifts proving to be amongst the most popular procedures.

However, more and more men are now getting in on the act, with gynaecomastia – the male breast procedure in which fat is removed from the chest area – proving to be particularly popular.

Even more men reported that they would like to have a cosmetic procedure carried out if the price was not an issue, and someone else was paying for it on their behalf.

Surgeon Dr Tristan de Chalain told the newspaper that said men were ‘just as sensitive’ about their appearance as women were.

He said, “It's exactly the same motivation – you have embarrassment about a particular feature … and they want to compete with younger guys. And often it's not unusual for wives to send their men to have something done."

“Basically, men – particularly as they get older but even when young – develop a female-like breast. It's very easily treated,” added Dr de Chalain.

The surgeon added that the vast majority of people who had some form of cosmetic surgery carried out came out of theatre feeling as though they had been given a new lease of life and a boost of confidence.

The men most likely to want to have a cosmetic procedure done were from the younger generations, with nobody from the 55-69 age bracket reporting that they would like to have a procedure done, reported the newspaper.
