Whilst botox has traditionally been streets ahead of other non-invasive cosmetic procedures, laser treatment is starting to catch up.
According to The Harley Medical Group, increasing numbers of people are opting for laser treatment to remove scarring caused by the tattoo removal process.
Use of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved laser treatment can have a marked impact on the appearance of post-tattoo removal scarring, in some cases reducing it by up to 75 per cent.
The group has reported a 30 per cent rise in clients booking in for the process, following high-profile celebrities such as Peter Andre, Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie and Kelly Osborne opting for the laser treatment to minimise the appearance of their scars.
Lead Nurse Counsellor at group, Lisa Littlehales, said, “The most common reasons for the removal of tattoos, is a new phase in life such as a change in relationship, or a new job, as seen with tattoo removal on celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox and Eva Longoria.
“The removal process can often result in scarring, leaving the memory of the tattoo visible and so defeating the point of the removal for the patient."
Ms Littlehales went on to explain that the laser technology breaks down the scar tissue and helps to create new healthy tissue.
“The result permanently reduces the appearance of the scar, by producing smoother, more even skin that is lighter in colour,” added Ms Littlehales.
The research found that the most popular part of the body for tattoo scar removal via laser was the wrists, followed by the back, ankles, feet and arms. Laser treatment can also be used to help minimise the appearance of stretch marks, which can be caused by pregnancy or dramatic weight loss.
