Whether the explanation lies in the rise of the selfie, our constant exposure to social media, or the growing influence of celebrity culture, looking good is now more important than ever. The number of men choosing to have cosmetic surgery may have dropped in 2014 according to British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, but there’s no doubt staying youthful looking is on many men’s agenda.
While some of the treatments preferred by men are different from those that are most popular among women, there are some trends that are definitely unisex – namely, liposuction, breast reduction (yes, you heard that right) and Rhinoplasty.
Liposuction
Liposuction has become popular amongst men due to its ability to give a more athletic, slim-line physique. It is important to carefully research the different kinds of liposuction, as there are now different procedures which all eradicate fat cells but just in slightly different ways. Laser liposuction is used to remove small amounts of fat from specific areas, and Vaser liposuction allows for up to four pints of fat to be removed in as little as two hours. Traditional liposuction, where fat is sucked out through a straw which is inserted into small cuts made into the fat layer, is able to remove large volumes of fat, although the recovery time is longer, often requiring an overnight stay.
Eyelid surgery
Everyone wants to stay looking youthful. Eyelid surgery helps men to reverse some of the signs of ageing, namely the sagging skin above the eyes. The procedure involves the surgeon trimming away any excess skin and fat, before the incisions are sewn up with fine stitches, so scars are almost impossible to see. The surgery is over in under three hours, although it is not risk free. Complications can include infection from the eye no longer closing properly, and on very rare occasions patients can suffer blindness.
Breast reduction
A male breast reduction is performed much like it would be on a woman, via an incision around the nipple. Liposuction may also be used if it is necessary to remove excess fat. Men can suffer from a condition called gynaecomastia, i.e. enlarged breasts, which can be genetic or caused by lifestyle. Men who have lost huge amounts of weight can also find that they have sagging skin that means they cannot achieve the athletic appearance they have worked so hard for.
Rhinoplasty (nose job)
Some men consider getting a nose job due to the pressures of being ‘photo ready’ at all times, but a huge number pursue Rhinoplasty due to having broken their nose playing sport. Nose jobs are fairly simple operations, and in most cases the work is carried out internally, so there is minimal risk of scarring. Patients can expect to wear a splint for some time after the operation, and it can take up to six months to fully recover.
Ear correction
Ear correction is very popular amongst men who are in their 20s. In most cases the procedure involves repositioning the ears so that they sit closer to the head; sometimes it is necessary to remove cartilage, which may also alter the size. There is usually a faint scar, which will eventually fade and is not easily visible.
It is vital that men research procedures thoroughly before deciding to go ahead with surgery – not everything is reversible, and while the right surgery can transform lives, it is not always a necessary step.
