Every so often, a new breed of accessory comes along that seems to give every outfit an edge, a ‘je ne sais quoi’ element that you can’t quite put your finger on. At the minute, it’s statement necklaces and collars. Whether it’s in the form of a dramatic necklace or a quirky detachable collar, if you invest in one accessory this season, make sure it’s for your neck. Tiny delicate jewellery is nowhere to be seen this season: AW12 is all about adding embellishment to your look wherever possible. A ‘go-anywhere’ piece of jazzy neckwear is an easy way to be on the trend and add a new season‘s edge to plain shirts and t-shirts – and even jumpers when it gets chilly!
There’s lots of choice out there as there is a different design for almost every AW12 trend. So take your pick from heavy metal plating, neon brights, chunky chains, bold beads and delicate lace… pretty much anything goes as long as it’s bold, eye-catching and oversized.
SUIT YOURSELF
To find your most flattering necklace study your face shape and features to see if they are softer or more angular. Always ‘go with’ your features rather than try to fight against them. For example, Angular faces (e.g. strong jaw, nose, cheekbones) should choose jewellery made up of sharp lines e.g. squares, diamonds, geometrics, crosses (see top necklaces); while a soft face (curved jaw, button nose, rounded cheeks) is complemented by curved lines e.g. circles, flowers, chains and lace (see bottom necklaces). Keep earings small when wearing a statement necklace.
