LEATHER FORECAST…. By Carol Spenser, MD StyleDirections.com

… FOR THE COOLER MONTHS AHEAD

Leather is the eternal Autumn/Winter trend. But for many seasons, it has come to be associated primarily with tough, edgy, biker style, and while AW12 doesn’t make a complete departure from this, it certainly offers a chic alternative. So, for those in need of a wardrobe shake-up, there is a new sleek and sophisticated way to wear leather, with pencil skirts, structured dresses, statement coats and beautifully cut trousers all making appearances on the AW12 catwalks. And as the the high street and boutique brands alike are showing, the trend translates perfectly from catwalk to street, and is proving to be surprisingly wearable for women of all ages.

If you’re not convinced, look to Valentino AW12 for the ultimate masterclass in making leather look romantic and ethereal. With sleek, feminine silhouettes and beautiful folk-inspired detailing, the aesthetic couldn’t have been any further away from Hell’s Angels connotations! And for another take on the trend, this season’s runways at Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci and Dolce and Gabbanna demonstrated a beautifully dramatic take on leather. If you don’t want to do the full head-to-toe leather look, opt for garments with leather panels or trimings which give a nod to the trend without being too extreme – see the LooseLine cape by La Redoute (above)and CinchedIn trousers by River Island (below).

Black leather is a wardrobe staple and an investment that will never date. Check out the StreamLine jacket (above) by M&S, which you’ll be wearing for many years to come. But if you’re craving an AW12 update, leather in rich burgundy shades is going to be a major trend for this season. La Redoute (below) has a 60s-style StraightUp shift-dress in this hot shade, and both ASOS and River Island feature it too.
