It’s 10 years since the American FDA approved Botox for cosmetic treatments.
The drug to banish wrinkles is now so popular that in American alone nearly 11.8 million procedures have been done since 2002, and 6 million women ask their doctors about Botox every year.
Botox is a highly purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into specific areas of the body, it temporarily restricts an overactive muscle or gland, typically for 3 to 10 months, depending on the patient.
While Botox had been used therapeutically to treat muscle spasms and neck pain for years, its first cosmetic milestone came when the F.D.A. deemed it safe and effective for minimizing glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows), in 2002, igniting a cosmetic revolution.
