Joan Rivers documents 734th cosmetic procedure for TV show

Joan Rivers invited television cameras into the operating theatre to document her 734th cosmetic procedure.

The 78-year-old comedienne, who has always spoken openly about her love of cosmetic surgery, went under the knife to "tune up" her neck . The operation was filmed for the first episode of the second series of her reality show Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best.

Rivers insisted on having the surgery despite protests from her daughter Melissa, who feared it could be dangerous because of her age. As the mother-daughter pair waited to see a surgeon, Melissa pleaded with her mother not to go through with the procedure, telling her: “I don’t want you to die.”

Melissa even staged a “skintervention” where she tried her best to talk her mother into changing her mind. But Rivers is determined to have the cosmetic surgery, and defiantly quipped: “My body is a temple, and my temple needs redecorating.”

Despite being famously vain, the comedienne allowed the cameras to film her without make-up as she prepared for the procedure. In the same episode, a surgeon is seen drawing lines on her face to show where the incisions would go.

As Rivers recuperates, Melissa becomes her mother's carer and tells the camera: "Cover at age two was easier to handle than my mother after an operation."

Before the surgery the outspoken comedienne joked that she is not going for "a Chaz Bono", referring to 42-year-old Bono's gender reassignment surgery.

Also in the show Rivers, who has had numerous cosmetic "tune ups" over the years in her quest for the perfect face and body, admits it would be her 734th procedure.
