Woman reveals why she got Botox in her 20s

A woman in her early 30s has written anonymously about her reasons for starting having regular Botox and filler injections in her 20s, claiming the procedures help to smooth out her scowl, crow’s feet and smile lines.

In an article for fashion and beauty website The Gloss, the writer complains of “overactive” muscles in her forehead and says as a teenager she was conscious of having a “deep cleft of worry and contempt” between her brows, even when she was not angry. This became more pronounced as she reached her early twenties, to the extent that her forehead would ache.

Just before her 30th birthday, the woman also spotted “serious crinkles” around her eyes when she smiled, prompting her to make an appointment for Botox injections with Dr Bracci at Verve Cosmetics, based in New York and New Jersey.

A couple of days later, the writer noticed her “forehead cleft” was gone and she was unable to scowl anymore. She could also smile without getting crow’s feet, but described a slight change in the way her cheeks moved following the treatment.

On a subsequent visit to the clinic, Dr Bracci pointed out the woman’s smile lines, which he said he could “correct” with a dermal filler called Radiesse. The writer says she was “sold” on the filler, which is injected once or twice a year and costs around $1,000 per syringe. She spends around $500 every four months on Botox.

Despite the expense and the short-term bruising caused by the Radiesse injections, the writer claims the treatment allows her to have some control over the ageing process.

"Maybe 29 is young to start injectables, but I’d rather fix problems in a gradual way as they start," she says. "You can either try to preserve certain aspects of your youthful appearance through elective medicine, or you can let your face age at full speed – either way, your face will be changing. I prefer to direct that change."
