More men getting cosmetic surgery to boost looks and confidence

It’s not just women who are striving for physical perfection, an increasing number of men are turning to cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance.

Male patients now account for around 10 per cent of all cosmetic surgery procedures carried out in the UK, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and the latest figures show a further 7 per cent rise in the number of men having work done. Among the most popular procedures are nose jobs and breast reduction surgery to remove “man boobs”.

With a host of male celebrities such as TV chef Gordon Ramsay and tennis star Boris Becker going under the knife recently, it is no surprise that men feel able to speak more openly about their cosmetic procedures.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, bar manager Scott Hamilton, 30, from Swinton, Greater Manchester, said that after spending £4,000 on a nose job last year, he caught the cosmetic surgery “bug” and went back to the clinic to have some Botox injections.

“Maybe it’s vain but I don’t see why it should be any different for men than women. If you can afford to change something you don’t like, do it,” he said.

“It’s been acceptable for women to enhance what nature gave them for too long. Now it’s our turn.”

Businessman Alistair Reynette-James, 46, from Cirencester, had always wanted a “ripped” six-pack stomach. He spent £15,000 on stomach liposuction, which was performed by a surgeon in Columbia.

Despite being in pain after the operation and having to wear a body suit for around a month, he told the newspaper he was “thrilled” with the results.

“My friends know I’m game for anything so none of this has surprised them. It’s done wonders for my self-esteem. I feel in proportion now. I don’t think I’ll have anything else done – but never say never.”
