Tattoo removal skyrocketing in popularity

Many people who opt to have a tattoo eventually end up suffering from 'tattoo remorse,' which has led to a growing trend in tattoo removal.

According to a public opinion poll carried out by Harris Interactive, around a third of people aged between 25 and 29 living in the US have at least one tattoo, along with a quarter of those aged between 30 and 39.

Celebrities and sport stars have a lot to do with the fascination of having your body inked – Andrew Gottlieb’s book 'In the Paint: Tattoos of the NBA and the Stories Behind Them,' revealed that 70 per cent of NBA basketball players have tattoos somewhere on their bodies.

Many dermatologists are finding that they are receiving rising numbers of requests for tattoo removal – which is carried out using laser treatment. Many clients are also opting for laser treatment to remove the scarring caused by the tattoo removal process, according to the Harley Medical Group. In some cases, the usage of laser treatment can reduce the appearance of post-tattoo removal scarring by up to 75 per cent.

According to one US-based dermatologist, who starred in the reality TV programme 'Dr. 90210,' 'there is a common misconception that the type of people opting to have tattoos removed are 'bikers and gang members.' However, this could not be further from the truth, Dr. Tattoff founder Will Kirby told Miller McCune.

“Our average patient is a female between the ages of 25 and 40 who got a tattoo as an aesthetic statement and now has a different lifestyle. It might be that the tattoo is a barrier to employment … maybe it’s just a sign associated with the person’s youth.”

One celebrity who is currently set to undergo tattoo removal is Twilight actress Nikki Reed. She is having the name of her old lover removed from the inside of her left wrist now that she is married to someone else. She told Starpulse, “That was called a period of time in my life that we’re now removing. It’s a Russian word … It’s somebody’s name. It’s a ballet dancer’s name that I met while I was living in Russia.”
