Women in Britain have been revealed to have the highest levels of obesity in Europe in a new set of statistics from the European Union.
The data found that 23.9 per cent of women in this country are classed as obese, putting the nation above all other countries in the survey. In Germany, for example, just 15.6 per cent of women were obese, while 12.9 per cent of French women and 9.3 per cent of Italian women fell into the same category.
While the root cause of the problem is likely to lie in attitudes to food and a health lifestyle, cosmetic surgery procedures can offer people a kick-start and a helping hand when it comes to weight loss.
Gastric bands, for example, cut down the amount of food a person is physically able to ingest, lowering their appetite and reducing their calorie intake. Liposuction and skin lifts are also sometimes on the cards for people who are struggling with obesity, although these kinds of procedures may be better suited for those who have already lost a large amount of weight and want to tidy up small problem areas of their newly-slim figure.
The EU statistics found that the percentage of obese younger women was of particular concern in the UK, with 16.6 per cent of those aged between 18 and 24 found to be severely overweight. This is almost four times the level of obesity identified in this age group in France.
Unfortunately, men in the UK are also facing problems with their weight, with 22.1 per cent classed as obese in the research. However, it was the older generations who were flagged up as problematic among men, with the 45 to 64-year-old age bracket shown to have the highest proportion of overweight men with 33.2 per cent deemed to be obese.
