The debate between which form of breast augmentation is best has been reignited by one doctor, who believes that his patients prefer silicone to saline.
Silicone's safety has been hotly contested, with previous bans in place in the US. But the material is now, thankfully, thought to be safe, and its new status is pushing its popularity up and up.
Dr Sam Speron noted that the US Food and Drug Administration's re-approval of silicone implants has been in place for around five years now, but it is only in the past 12 months that women are starting to accept the safety declaration.
He remarked: “Even though I was involved in the silicone implant studies, even up to the last few years around 80 per cent of women chose to go with saline implants for their cosmetic breast augmentations.
“This year, it has completely turned around with about 75 per cent of my cosmetic breast enhancement patients choosing silicone breast implants.”
It is thought that women choose the silicone option because this form of cosmetic surgery has a more natural look and feel and also has a lower risk of wrinkling and rippling than the saline method.
But this is offset somewhat with the higher risk of capsular contracture, so patients are advised to have routine MRI scans if they have silicone breast implants.
Breast augmentation has long been one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery, with many women opting for the procedure to give themselves a boost in their body confidence, perhaps after losing weight or having children.
