Tips For Maintaining White Teeth

October 10, 2013

When it comes to wanting a healthy smile, many people opt for teeth whitening treatments. However, before making the appointment with your dentist, you should first consider things you can do to maintain a white smile without having to undergo any procedures. Brushing and flossing on a daily basis is vital if you want to keep your teeth healthy and shiny. When it comes to home bleaching sets, it is worth noting that these can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Excessive bleaching may also result in your teeth turning grey and becoming over-sensitive due to the enamel wearing off. Taking proper care of your teeth is closely linked to your diet, as well. Drinking black tea and coffee and eating sugary foods can lead to your teeth changing colour. Therefore, trying to cut down on these types of food and drinks, along with kicking the smoking habit if you have one, could help you regain the shiny white colour of your teeth. If these do not produce the results you were hoping for, visit your dentist to discuss options for a professional bleaching procedure. Sometimes, after the treatment, you may feel sensitivity in your teeth, which can last between 24 and 48 hours. If sensitivity continues for longer, you should talk to your dentists about it. Also, give your teeth time to recover after the procedure by making sure you avoid cold and hot drinks and foods, as well as acidic products. Take calcium as a supplement to strengthen the enamel further, experts advise.
