What is DHT?
DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone in full, is a steroid and hormone. The enzyme called 5α-reductase synthesises DHT from testosterone in areas like the prostate and hair follicles, as well as the testes and adrenal glands. Essentially DHT is made from testosterone and helps the body grow and regulate itself. While crucial in puberty, DHT in adults inhibits and reduces the proper growth of hair in the follicles in a process called ‘miniaturisation’. Eventually the hairs are so deprived of nutrients they may weaken and stop working entirely. Luckily Finasteride – a hair loss medication – is a 5α-reductase inhibitor. You can often combine it with Propecia to treat hair loss more effectively.
