The Procedure

Before you decide whether or not to go ahead with treatment, you will need to have a consultation with a surgeon or cosmetic doctor. They will be able to examine you and go through your medical history to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate. The consultation is the ideal time to bring up any questions or concerns you may have. This will also give you a chance to talk to your doctor about your reasons for wanting treatment and discuss your expectations of the outcome.

Once you have decided to go ahead, you will be given a consent form to sign. Make sure you read this and all the associated material you are given carefully. It is always a good idea to have our consultation on a different day to your treatment as it gives you time to go away and think about the procedure and read all the information you have been given about it.

On the day of your treatment, your doctor or surgeon will usually take photographs to use for comparison later. They will then mark up the area being treated before administering the local anaesthetic. You will be given an injection of local anaesthetic to allow the surgeon to make a small incision through which he/she can then insert a cannula to administer the rest of the anaesthetic. This is often the worse part of the procedure, as it can feel quite uncomfortable while the anaesthetic is being infiltrated. You will then be left to make sure the anaesthetic has taken effect before the procedure continues.

The treatment itself usually only takes between 30-45 minutes. The product will be injected into your breasts, buttocks or calves via a cannula. The doctor/surgeon will use one syringe at a time until they achieve the desired result. You shouldn’t feel anything other than a slight tugging or pulling sensation during the treatment. It can be slightly uncomfortable but shouldn’t be painful in any way.

More photographs may be taken immediately afterwards as a record. You can usually walk straight out of the clinic after having Macrolane(TM) injections however you may want to sit and rest for a short while afterwards. You may be a little drowsy from the anaesthetic so it is a good idea to get someone to pick you up if possible.

Most people can go back to their normal activities the next day however you will be asked to avoid sports or vigorous activity for at least two weeks. You will also need to wear a support garment to aid the healing process.
