Types of Cell Therapy

Avita Medical
The first type of cosmetic cell therapy used in the UK was Isolagen. Touted in the press as a treatment that could enable you to ‘grow your own face-lift’ the hype surrounding Isolagen was far beyond what the treatment was actually able to achieve. The treatment involved taking a biopsy from behind your ear and then harvesting new cells that were then injected back into the face. Although some doctors reportedly achieved good results in patients using this technique, there were a lot of inconsistencies and the treatment was withdrawn from the UK in 2007. Despite its shortcomings, the consept behind Isolagen was actually very good as many people liked the idea of being able to use their own cells for facial rejuvenation. Since then more refined techniques have been developed to address the problems experienced with Isolagen. There are now three other types of cell therapy available in the UK:

  • Vavelta
  • MyCells.

Vavelta

Vavelta involves the use of young, healthy donor cells to repair damaged cells in the skin and face. The donor cells are extensively tested, screened and multiplied in culture. This treatment does not require undergoing a biopsy and has the added advantage of not having to wait for your own cells to be cultured. It is particularly designed to help repair scarred or damaged skin by introducing collagen-producing firboblasts into the effected area.

MyCells

MyCells is a new treatment, which uses stem cells and growth factors from your own blood to regenerate your skin. These ingredients are found in the Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) of your blood. PRP has been widely used for many years in plastic surgery, orthopedics, dentistry, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants. Once injected into your skin, these substances will accelerate the normal healing process by encouraging new collagen formation in the injected area and rejuvenate your skin.
