Atopic dermatitis (also known as atopic eczema) is a skin disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the skin caused by an abnormal reaction to irritants, food and environmental allergens. The skin becomes red, flaky and itchy. The skin of the face, inner elbows and the backs of the knees is most commonly affected.
