Choosing a Thread-lift Surgeon
A thread-lift, also known as feather lift surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to gently lift sagging facial skin to produce a smoother, more youthful appearance. While the number of thread lift treatments being performed in the UK continues to grow, finding a fully qualified cosmetic surgeon who is skilled in the procedure is not always an easy task.
Suitable candidates for a thread lift procedure are those who are experiencing mild to moderate sagging of facial tissues, usually those in their mid-thirties to fifties. A thread lift may be a less invasive alternative to a face lift to subtly rejuvenate the face without the risks and downtime associated with surgery. However, it may be that you will require a neck or face lift to deliver the results you require. An experienced, reputable surgeon should be able to advise you on the correct combination of procedures to create the desired effect.
Selecting a qualified, experienced and trusted surgeon to perform this delicate procedure can be a tricky process. We have provided the checklist below to help you make an informed decision and find reputable thread lift surgeon.
1. Check the credentials of your practitioner
Only fully trained and qualified cosmetic surgeons should perform a thread lift procedure. Look for a cosmetic surgeon who has held an NHS consultant’s position, who has a FRCS (plast) qualification and who is listed on the General Medical Council’s specialist register of Plastic Surgery. Do not be afraid to ask to see certificates.
2. Pick someone who specialises in your treatment
There are many qualified plastic surgeons, but it is always best to find one who is experienced in a thread lift treatment. Look for a practitioner with specific training in thread lift procedures and who is up to speed on current techniques. The thread lift procedure involves very fine surgical sutures being inserted in to the soft tissue of the face to lift and support sagging areas, so it is particularly important for your practitioner to have a good understanding of anatomy in order to know where to carefully place the threads. It may be that you will require a neck or face lift to achieve the best results, so find an aesthetic surgeon with experience in various types of facial surgery who will be able to advise you on the best course of treatment to deliver the results you desire.
3. Look for membership of professional organisations
There are several professional societies that are specific to cosmetic surgeons. BAPRAS and BAAPS are the most highly regarded and only permit the most skilled and experienced of surgeons to gain entry.
4. Ensure your consultation is with your practitioner
In some clinics, the first person to see a patient is a ‘counsellor’ or ‘advisor’, who will only be able to give you generic advice and is generally there in a sales role. When you are booking a consultation with your chosen clinic, make sure you ask to see the actual surgeon who will be operating on you.
5. Be comfortable
Prior to your procedure, it is important to clearly set out your expectations with a cosmetic surgeon.
Make sure you are relaxed and have built up a good rapport with your surgeon. You should always feel that your concerns and questions are being addressed thoroughly. Make sure you’re satisfied with the answers you’ve been given before the consultation is over.
6. Ask to see before and after photographs
Feel free to ask to speak to previous thread lift patients for testimonials, or to see before and after images of patients your practitioner has treated. However, do remember that while before and after photographs can give you some insight into the surgeon’s ability, they cannot guarantee you the exact same result.
