What Is Hair Loss Surgery?

What is a Hair Restoration Procedure?

Hair loss surgery, Transplant, Replacement or Restoration in the U.K is a cosmetic surgery procedure that transplants healthy hair follicles into balding areas to restore hair growth. Hair loss is estimated to affect around 7.9 million men and 1.6 million women in the UK and can have a devastating psychological effect. There are a number of factors that can cause hair loss including genetics, stress, ageing and chronic illness as well as medication and nutritional deficiencies. Surgical treatments for hair loss are the most effective way to treat baldness or thinning hair. While in the past many people were put off of surgery because it was incredibly invasive, more advanced contemporary techniques have made hair loss surgery far less traumatic and with much better results.

Am I a Candidate? Suitable candidates for hair transplant surgery are those who have lost hair, whether due to genetic factors, illness or stress. Hair follicles that are apparently resistant to the balding process are transplanted from the back and sides of the head and relocated to the balding scalp.

Before Hair Restoration Surgery – Your first consultation with a practitioner should clearly set out your expectations of this treatment and whether your practitioner thinks he or she can achieve the results that you’d like. As baldness is a condition which continues throughout life, it is important that the practitioner takes into account future hair loss when deciding on a course of treatment.

During Surgery – During hair replacement treatment, the donor hair is removed from an appropriate area of skin (usually at the back of the head) with a scalpel. A crescent-shaped strip around 20cm long by about 6mm in width will be removed then staples or stitches are used to close the wound. Once the donor tissue is collected, the skin is then grafted onto the skin. This process can take many hours, depending on the number of grafts required.

Recovery – You will need to allow at least one day for your hair loss surgery procedure, then you may need several days off to recover during the healing process, especially if larger areas are transplanted that may result in more swelling. A turban-like bandage will need to be worn for the first night to help secure the grafts and you may need to return for further procedures to obtain a good aesthetic result.

Benefits of Hair Loss Surgery- Modern hair transplant techniques performed by skilled doctors can produce natural-looking results, which are often indistinguishable from normal hair.

Risks and Complications – There are few potential side effects with hair restoration surgery and, owing to the use of local anaesthetic, there tends to be no pain during the actual procedure. Any potential complications are minor and usually only involve mild swelling for 2-3 days after the procedure, along with some mild discomfort. Small scabs may develop over each graft which will last for 7-14 days before they fall off. Rarely, an infection may develop at the site where any cuts have been made, but any scarring tends to be very slight.

Hair Loss Surgery Cost – Hair Loss Surgery Prices vary and tend to be based on the number and type of grafts transplanted, along with the amount you require. You can pay anything from £1,000-£10,000 depending on the clinic and number of grafts and procedures that you require.

Choosing a Hair Loss Clinic or  Surgeon in the U.K – It is important to pick a reputable, experienced cosmetic surgeon for a hair loss procedure.
