Surgery is an option for weight loss but there are also medical methods of weight loss.  This can be in the form of medications to aid slimming.  Alli is currently available in the UK without a prescription over the counter.  There are other prescription medications available to help with weight loss but these require supervision by a doctor.  Some of these treatments are only available in specialised slimming clinics.  Most slimming medications require regular followup and monitoring to ensure potential side effects do not arise.

HI

There's only one good use for celebrity weight loss DVDs – as coasters on your table! Seriously, they can be great to get you started on a fitness regime but there's no longevity in them – the novelty wears off after a few weeks; they get boring; you lose interest. I'm also a big believer that some home exercise is obviously good, but to get focussed and to keep motivated it's so much better to do your fitness elsewhere – whether that's the gym, a council run exercise class or a frinds' home.

THE benefits of weight-loss surgery have been questioned after it emerged that for every three gastric bands fitted in Scotland, one patient ends up having it removed.

The rate of reversals, which is costing the health board thousands every year, has raised fresh doubts over the controversial procedure.

It is understood the majority of people who have the band removed do so because of a medical issue, even though it is recommended that it remains in place for life. Research has shown almost 90 per cent of people regain weight after it is taken out.

I do however think weight loss surgery can be the right way forward for many people. Make sure you are comfortable with the doctor you are receiving advice from and ask many questions. There are lots of resources available on the internet – READ READ READ!

Hi, thanks for your question.

Many people want a 'quick fix' to weight loss, but there isn't really one. Certain diets may help you dramatically drop a dress size but can they help you keep the weight OFF? They rarely do. Likewise, Celebrity DVDs are great – they motivate you and help you get fit and lose weight – but you must remember not to stop once you've achieved your goal.

For people with more severe weight loss issue, surgery can be a solution. Here are your options with some idea of the cost involved:

Gastric band
surgery

This procedure is
performed under general anaesthetic and can take up to an hour. A small,
flexible silicone band is fitted around a section of the stomach via keyhole
surgery and connected to a ‘port’ which is positioned under the skin near to
the ribs. The band creates a smaller pouch through which food passes through
slowly, and is then absorbed normally by the lower part of the tummy. Prices
for gastric band surgery range from £5000 to £8000, depending on where you have
the surgery.

Gastric bypass
surgery

This procedure is
also performed under general anaesthetic but takes up to three hours. It can
also be performed using keyhole or open surgery. The stomach is divided using
surgical staples thus creating a smaller stomach. The small intestine is then
attached to this smaller stomach, shortening the digestive system. This will
not only make you feel fuller quicker, but it will reduce the amount of
calories absorbed through digestion. The cost of gastric bypass surgery can be
up to £15000 as it is a complex procedure.

Gastric balloon

Whilst you are
under sedation a gastric balloon is fitted using an endoscope going through the
mouth and down the oesophagus; it is then inflated with either air or saline.
The balloon serves to fill up a portion of the stomach but is usually removed
after 6 months, so is only a temporary measure. In light of this the cost is
considerably less, usually around £3000 to £4000.

Biliopancreatic
Diversion

This is the
procedure through which a section of the lower stomach is removed. This reduces
the number of calories that are absorbed into the body. Bilopancreatic
diversion has a good success rate with many patients reducing their excess
weight by up to 80% according to the British Obesity Patient Surgery
Association and NICE.

NHS funding

Private weight loss
surgery costs can be expensive, but there is the option of having surgery in an
NHS hospital for the morbidly obese. The guidelines are strict, and are
typically reliant upon your Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a weight ratio.
However, if you are thinking about weight loss surgery, you should discuss your
options with your GP. They will not only be able to inform you more fully of
the procedures available, but will be able to refer you to a specialist if
needed.

Bridge2Aid

More than 70% of the world's population have no access to the simplest of dental pain relief, leaving billions to face a daily battle with pain in the toughest of life circumstances.

Bridge2Aid was founded as a response to this terrifying problem, by providing access to dental pain relief and to help the millions of people suffering in the developing world. Focussing on sustainability, and with the help of dentists and nurses from the UK, they train more than 48 health workers each year with plans for expansion. Because of this work, an estimated 1.7 million people now live within reach of someone who can help them when they have dental pain.

Bridge2Aid sends around 120 volunteer dentists and nurses from the UK out to East Africa to help train local health workers in basic extraction techniques. This is an area where people have no access to pain relief, leaving millions in pain, and often it lasts years - leaving people unable to work and feed their families.

There are Clinical Officers in place who look after around 20,000 people and dress wounds, deliver babies etc but they don't have any dental training - so this is where we come in! They have 1 week theory and then spend 2 weeks of intensive hands-on training time with our volunteers. If they "pass" the programme, they are given all the equipment they will need to care for their own communities.
