People of all ages opt for laser hair removal because it’s such an effective and convenient treatment. It’s particularly popular with women and men in their late twenties through to their forties, as they have more disposable cash to invest in themselves.

An invisible laser beam zaps the hair follicle by seeking out the dark pigmentation in the hair then directing the laser beam at its root to destroy it. Almost anywhere on the body can be treated – the face, neck, bikini line, underarms, nipples, tummy line, arms, legs, ears, back and chest. The treatment is virtually pain free and while some people feel a little discomfort during the treatment, this does not last long.

Gastric band surgery has become a legitimate surgical method of intervention to handle the effects of clinical obesity. There can be no denying that gastric band surgery is a highly invasive and drastic form of weight loss.

In essence, a small inflatable band will be surgically fitted around the upper part of the stomach, the part of the stomach to which food will drop down from the throat. Because the band will restrict the physical size of the “pouch” of the stomach this means that less food can actually be consumed at any given time, and the patient will also feel much fuller with less food.

Christopher Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “The only way you will be able to determine whether gastric band surgery is an appropriate solution to weight loss is to consult with your physician to discuss the options. You need to be prepared to change your diet and increase your exercise to obtain the maximum benefit.”

The mini face lift aims to bring back youthfulness but only takes an hour to complete. The plastic surgeon will make small incisions along the patient’s hairline and behind the ears. The doctor will then extract excess fat, and remove extra skin from targeted areas through these incisions. The operation should result with the patient having a more youthful look as the operation reduced any sagging on the face.

Christopher Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “Facelifts are an excellent solution for many people. The mini facelift is just one more option which your surgeon may consider appropriate for you. For this reason always make sure you visit a qualified surgeon and talk through your options thoroughly.”

There was a buzz at the recent aesthetic plastic surgery conference over breast augmentation using autologous fat transfer. This is where fat is gently removed from an area of the body, filtered, cleaned, and inserted in the breast.

Many surgeons are hopeful that lipoaugmentation will be a means of contouring existing breast implants or even a solo breast augmentation procedure. Right now though lipoaugmentation is not widely practiced and not thoroughly studied in clinical trials. Christopher Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said “Fat transfer for breast enhancement is a promising procedure and has been used extensively for reconstructive purposes. However, the safety of lipoaugmentation in the breast has not been documented.”

If you’re looking for a temporary fix that lasts a bit longer, experts say the new injectable wrinkle fillers, such as Restylane or Juvederm, can help.

The filler is injected just under the puffy area to even out the look and remove the indentation caused by the puff. The upper eyelift is an outpatient procedure that takes about half an hour. It requires only local anaesthesia and takes about two weeks to heal.

The American Cancer Society found that people with very large waists – 47 inches or more for men and 42 inches and more in women – were about twice as likely to die, compared to thinner people.

Christopher Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “The important thing if you have a very large waist is not to panic. Your cosmetic surgeon can work in tandem with a diet and exercise plan to reduce your waist size – and the associated health risks.”

There are many excellent moisturiser-sunscreen combinations on the market. And, don’t equate cost with excellence. The pricier ones have the big ticket to pay for all the marketing and advertising.

What SPF (sun protection factor) number should you use? The number scale was developed to indicate potency relative to elapsed time of use. Divide the SPF number by four to get the number of hours the product is expected to be effective.

Pick a mid-strength product, say SPF 30; reapply every 2-3 hours and you cannot go wrong.

The extra skin and fat hanging below the belt line in the lower area of the stomach is called the pannus, or abdominal “apron”. This may extend several inches from the body, covering the genital areas, and will likely become burdensome because of the added weight.

There is a solution however. Removing the pannus involves a method that directly attacks the area surgically. This is a plastic surgery procedure called panniculectomy, or, abdominal panniculectomy. This specific surgical operation removes the pannus, and is usually performed on its own, or with another operation called abdominoplasty (more commonly known as the tummy tuck).

Christopher Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “Apronectomy does have significant health and quality of life benefits. Health problems associated with obesity should be addressed before undergoing abdominal panniculectomy or apronectomy.”

Zimmerman and colleagues tracked about 5,500 Swedish men from age 20 to age 80 and found that the 1,930 men who were obese when they were 20 were twice as likely to die at any given age than were their counterparts who were not obese at age 20.

We’ve all heard of Jennifer Aniston and Paris Hilton’s baby food diet. Then there was Beyonce’s maple syrup diet and Liz Hurley eating on a nursery plate using children’s cutlery.

So it’s no wonder that a new survey by the UK’s only TV chat show dedicated to cosmetic surgery and aesthetic treatments, MyFaceMyBody.com, found that three out of five – 63% of people polled – said that celebrity diets don’t work. And they knew what they were talking about because 53% of people asked said they had actually tried to follow a celebrity diet.

According to presenter Stephen Handisides, a cosmetic surgery expert and former male model who previously won ‘Specsavers of the Year’ contest alongside Gok Wan, the explosion of celebrity culture means that more people are ignoring doctor’s advice and going to more extreme lengths to achieve their desired look: “Going to your doctor should be the first port of call for anyone wanting to lose an extreme amount of weight – not a celebrity gossip magazine. People should remember that any extreme diet a celebrity like Angelina Jolie goes in is usually for a very short time, just before an awards show like The Oscars, for example.”

The good news is that people are realising that celebrities are not good role models when it comes to dieting. Stephen said: “People aren’t stupid, and the fact that 63% of people we spoke to said that celebrity diets were rubbish shows that they take what they read in magazines with a large dose of salt.”

MyFaceMyBody first aired on Tuesday 29 June on InformationTV, Sky Channel 166 and Freesat 402. The show is repeated on Thursdays at 3pm and Sundays at 6.30pm as well as being re-shown every Tuesday at the same time, with a new episode every month. As well as appearing on Sky TV, the programme is also be available to watch on demand on consumer website MyFaceMyBody.com.

London – 4 August, 2010 – The UK’s largest network of consultant plastic surgeons, SaferCosmeticSurgery (www.safercosmeticsurgery.co.uk), today revealed the results of a survey it initiated among fellow plastic surgeons which shows little to no support for a scheme launched by the Government to bring regulation to the injectables industry. The poll highlights that over nine out of ten (93%) surgeons do not support the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services’ (IHAS) Register of Injectable Cosmetic Providers (known as “TreatmentsYouCanTrust”), due to launch to the public this month and has already cost over £200,000 of public money. The scheme, created under the direction of the Department of Health, claims it will help the public avoid ‘cosmetic cowboys’ but has been branded a waste of taxpayers’ money by the country’s top surgeons.

According to SaferCosmeticSurgery founding member Charles Nduka, a consultant plastic surgeon and member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS):

“Over two hundred members of the BAAPS were polled – all highly trained and experienced UK surgeons – and 93% said that did not support the scheme. In fact less than 4% stated they would join. The scheme offers little protection from inexperienced or poorly trained practitioners, so the public is still at risk from cosmetic cowboys.”

In their press releases, the IHAS urge providers to register as it will bring them ‘commercial advantage’, and their latest announcement this month claims that those who have joined ‘are already seeing the business benefits’.

Adam Searle, a consultant plastic surgeon, former President of the BAAPS and member of SaferCosmeticSurgery added:

‘It is utter madness that a scheme born out of a real need to regulate and control invasive cosmetic treatments should be part funded by providers, and then proceed to celebrate an increase in capture of ‘business’ for those who simply pay to join in. It’s a muddle, and there should be no surprise that there is a reluctance from professional associations to support such a hypocritical approach.’

According to Charles Nduka;

“Those of us working in this profession every day can clearly see this voluntary register does not address the real problems. Providers of injectable treatments who have operated outside of the Care Quality Commission registration thus far can not be trusted to self-regulate. Providers who are already operating within accepted guidelines, qualifications and facilities aren’t the ones causing the problems. This is one of the reasons behind the launch of SaferCosmeticSurgery and our mission to provide a trusted resource so that people can make informed decisions on treatments and providers.”

Concerned with the increasing number of complications and dissatisfied patients they were seeing as a result of inexperienced practitioners or cheap deals abroad, the team behind SaferCosmeticSurgery banded together an elite group of independent consultant surgeons especially selected on the most stringent criteria. Not only is membership of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) a requirement but – unlike any other commercial provider – eligibility also hinges on a minimum of 15 years’ experience since medical school. The logic being that, although no surgery can be entirely without risk, together they would be able to offer patients the safest options available by the most experienced hands. Of note the SaferCosmeticSurgery surgeons:

Do not use ‘middlemen’ or salespeople

Carry out comprehensive pre-and post-operative consultations and at the surgeon’s discretion, the surgeon may waive the consultation fee

Were selected by asking top surgeons who they themselves would recommend in a particular town/ city

Are not employed by a commercial company or flown in from abroad

Have established local private practices and will be available to you for years to come

For further information about SaferCosmeticSurgery, visit www.safercosmeticsurgery.co.uk or call 0800 622 6262.

Today, the new Minister of State for Health, Simon Burns, confirmed his backing for the IHAS Register of Injectable Cosmetic Providers, set to go live to the public in September.

Simon Burns said, “The IHAS Register of Injectable Cosmetic Providers has the potential to make a very real difference to the safety and quality of services on offer in this growing industry.”

The Register runs background screens and registers Quality Assurance Mark approval for regulated healthcare professionals (doctors, registered nurses and dentists) and organisations and facilities involved in injectable cosmetics.

The Register has also received the firm support of Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS Medical Director, Department of Health, who stated, “I continue to support industry-led regulation as the best way forward for these treatments and I was pleased with the initial launch of the Treatments You Can Trust scheme this year.”

The IHAS Register of Injectable Cosmetic Providers, which was backed by the former chief medical officer Professor Sir Liam Donaldson and received funding from the Department of Health, has been live to providers since April enabling them to apply for registration through www.treatmentsyoucantrust.co.uk and shown on the Directory.

Sally Taber, Director of the IHAS, commented, “As a result of the stringent criteria required to register on Treatments You Can Trust, we can see already that some providers are reassessing their own governance structures in order for them to qualify; this can only have positive effects.”

Organisations and solo practitioners must meet the high IHAS standards and training principles, which specify that only doctors, dentists and registered nurses can be involved in the delivery of these injectable cosmetic treatments to patients. All practitioners are accountable to their statutory regulators and must adhere to the standards set by the General Medical Council, the General Dental Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Providers already directory enabled and clearly visible on the register, include Bupa Dental, Freedom Health, Medizen, sk:n, Renew Clinic, The Harley Medical Group and Transform.

With just seven weeks to go until Treatments You Can Trust goes live to the public, providers need to ensure that they are directory enabled by following the five stages of registration:

STAGE 1: Initial Expression of Interest – Providers to pay £50 +VAT to record their initial interest in the scheme, enables access to the standards and training principles which all providers must meet to gain registration.

STAGE 2: Self Assessment against Standards and Training Principles – Providers are required to complete self-assessment forms and submit evidence of their practice and pay the full registration fee of £500 +VAT for individual practitioners or £1000 +VAT for larger organisations. Review of the evidence will take a maximum of 10 working days.

STAGE 3: Assessment and Award of the Quality Mark – Practitioners will be contacted by email to inform them of whether they have been awarded the Quality Assurance Mark they will then be issued with a certificate to display in the practice demonstrating that they achieved the standards required for the quality mark

STAGE 4: Inspection – Inspections will be conducted of registered organisations.

STAGE 5: Annual Renewal – Registration is valid for 12 months, after which time practitioners will need to complete the process again and pay the appropriate renewal fee.

HOW TO APPLY

The web-based applications are being managed by CHKS, the UK’s leading independent provider of healthcare intelligence and quality improvement services.

To ensure the smooth running of the application process CHKS will be offering the following:

• PAPER REFERRALS – the opportunity for providers to submit their self-assessment forms and supporting evidence in hard copy format should they be experiencing difficulty with their on-line application.

• ONE-TO-ONE BRIEFINGS – site visits to practitioners having difficulty with the process of application, offering hands on advice

• EMAIL ASSISTANCE – offering providers an email hotline, Ihascosmetics@CHKS.co.uk for any questions regarding the application process

To find out more on how to register, providers can visit www.treatmentsyoucantrust.co.uk or email the CHKS at Ihascosmetics@CHKS.co.uk.

It is quite common for a person to need several procedures to bring about the desired results. For example, having had liposuction on your thighs you may also need it on your tummy. You may also need a breast reduction to maintain the slimming look.

Chris Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “Combining treatments also presents significant advantages to the patient in terms of practicality and efficiency. One good example is that the practice of undergoing multiple surgeries all at once will save the patient time and trouble.”

Be aware also, that combining treatments will require longer under operation and may require an extended period of recovery time.

Fed-up with your fat ankles? Are your ankles the same girth as you calfs? Do you think your legs look like tree trunks?

An ankle-liposuction procedure gives better definition to the legs by making the circumference of the ankles smaller than the rest of the legs. Excess fat are removed to give the legs a more shapely appearance.

Ankle liposuction is a surprisingly complicated process but it is effective. Unlike the rest of the body, the ankles and the legs lack deep compartments where fat cells may be stored. Instead, the fat is positioned, if not attached, to the bones and the tissues. This makes removing it so much harder.

It was more effective in terms of the speed at which the skin tightens afterwards. Both methods were effective in destroying fat cells.

Chris Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “The ideal candidate for a liposuction procedure is someone of average weight with firm, elastic skin who has pockets of fat in specific areas that they would like removed. Liposuction is not a solution for obesity; it is designed for removing small areas of fat that do not respond to a healthy diet and regular exercise.”

Researchers who’ve looked at the brains of the lovelorn say rejection by a romantic partner lights up areas of the brain that are associated with addiction, reward, craving, and depression.

The good news is that study researcher, Helen E. Fisher, PhD, says it is possible to break the habit, though it’s not easy.

Researchers found that looking at photos of former partners stimulated several key areas of participants’ brains much more than viewing pictures of “neutral” people. Fisher tells WebMD that rejection causes the neurotransmitter dopamine to wash over the brain, triggering feelings of frenzied desperation that can lead to behaviors such as stalking, homicide, and suicide.

“You crave the person who dumped you,” Fisher said. “You go through withdrawal, you can relapse, and cravings can be sparked months after you think you’ve gotten over it.”

Though it may take a while, the researchers say they found that the greater the number of days since rejection, the less activity showed up in the brain area associated with attachment.

Having breast implants is not the only option around to improve the shape of your breasts. Did you know about the breast lift?

Breast lift surgery, technically known as mastopexy, is the process of removing excess skin from the breasts to raise them up, shrink the areola if necessary, and produce younger, firmer looking breasts.

Chris Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “Over time, your breasts can sag and lose elasticity. Other factors, such as gravity, your weight, breastfeeding and genetics, also affect how your breasts will develop over time. Breast lift surgery, technically known as mastopexy, is the process of removing excess skin from the breasts to raise them up, shrink the areola if necessary, and produce younger, firmer looking breasts.

“Breast lift surgery helps you to get rid of sagging but it does not necessarily create perfectly shaped breasts and does not restore roundness to the top. If this is your desire, your surgeon may recommend having breast implants placed during the same time.”

The fear of the risks of laser eye surgery prevent many people from undergoing the operation. But just how significant are the risks?

As with all surgical procedures there will always be an element of risk but the chances of any serious complications occurring are very small. Having carried out a 2 year study, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) deemed laser eye surgery to be “safe and efficacious for use in appropriately selected patients”.

Some of the most common risks found, post-op are:

Dry eye: This is probably the most common risk of laser eye surgery. The reason there is the risk of dry eyes following the surgery is because corneal nerves severed during the procedure. These nerves send information to the lacrimal gland to produce tears when the eye is dry.

Corneal infection: This is a serious complication and will need to be treated with antibiotics and steroid eye drops.

Over/under correction: This essentially means that the laser does not accurately correct the prescription. This can typically be treated once the eye has fully healed with a laser re-enhancement.

What does a nose job do? And why there are plenty of celebrity nose jobs? The answer is self esteem. According to Chris Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery: “Everyone has something that they dislike about their body. Most of the time this is not a big problem. But for some, particularly if you are a celebrity, it becomes a massive issue. Because the nose if the focal point of your face, confidence over a ‘big’ or ‘weird’ nose can plummet. For people of TV this is worse because your nose can appear bigger in a viewfinder of a camera.”

Today, rhinoplasty is a common, straight-forward procedure. A Rhinoplasty can increase or reduce the size of your nose, straighten a lump on the bridge of the nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. A cosmetic surgeon will be able to talk you through the different types of rhinoplasty procedure and advise which one is right for you.

After weight loss, or bariatric surgery, your food intake will be limited therefore it is very important to ensure you are taking in all the essential vitamins and minerals you need.

A popular form of bariatric supplements is Probiotics. Probiotics supplement the bariatric surgery diet to help maintain the appropriate assemblage of a healthy digestive system. These bariatric supplements also help in maintaining bowel health, bowel regularity, immunity and carbohydrate absorption.

Protein bariatric supplements can also be used to complete the bariatric surgery diet. The most common sources for these bariatric supplements include soy, whey and rice. Rice protein is a particularly good bariatric supplement since it is gluten free and low in fat and sugar. Soy is a good supplement for bariatric surgery diet as it is vegetable based and therefore cholesterol free.

Also include Omega-3 as part of your main bariatric surgery diet supplements. Omega-3 is used to boost general health after the surgery.

Now they have been joined by an up and coming tennis star.

Romanian tennis hopeful Simona Halep was a junior champion at the French Open in 2008 but the extra weight on her chest was uncomfortable and caused severe back pain, which affected her performance on the court.

She has now had an op that reduced her breasts to a more modest – and manageable – 34C.

Single mother Debrahlee Lorenzana has been warned by her current employer to stop talking about her dismissal from Citibank in New York.

Her lawsuit alleges she was ordered to: ‘Refrain from wearing certain items of clothing, in particular, turtleneck tops, pencil skirts, fitted business suits, or other properly tailored clothing.

‘In blatantly discriminatory fashion, the plaintiff was advised that as a result of the shape of her figure, such clothes were purportedly “too distracting” for her male colleagues and supervisors to bear.’

A group of practitioners will provide guidance to the body setting out regulations to ensure the sector is monitored and accountable for its practice.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has continuously campaigned for increased legislation for the industry.

BAAPS president Nigel Mercer will be helping the project committee in Brussels design a framework of regulations to ensure patients will receive safe treatment and a high standard of facilities. He believes this move to monitor the cosmetic surgery industry is overdue.

Apart from greater availability of new types of injectable filler treatments to treat wrinkles, laser resurfacing, micro current technology (computer-aided cosmetology instrument) and chemical peels all offer effective alternatives to more expensive facial surgery. Many providers now offer these treatments as a package, which, taken together, are called `non-surgical face lifts’. Recovery time from these treatments is faster than surgery and they are often much more affordable.

Physical activity can improve all aspects of health, from relieving stress and anxiety to losing weight, reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and improving sexual performance. If it came in the form of a pill, we’d all be asking for it. Yet too many men are now physically inactive.

The government hopes to get two million more people active by 2012. Sport England wants to get one million adults taking part in more sport by 2012/13.

Men’s Health Week 2010, which takes place during the early stages of the World Cup in South Africa, will make a major contribution to this campaign to get the nation more active and more healthy. It will get men up off the sofa and walking, jogging, gardening, swimming, playing sport… in short, moving more.

Chris Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said: “As part of the drive to look and feel better talk to an expert about cosmetic surgery. A good place to start is a website such as www.myfacemybody.com”

Scars and stretch marks are all very different and delicate to treat. Ideally, the treatment should be customize for each individual patient. Scars and stretch marks are typically treated with three different lasers in each session.

First, every scar or stretch mark is individually targeted. Next, an overall color blending of the scar area (painting) is done, causing the turn-over of your base-line melanin (old melanin is replaced with new) which evens out your coloration. Thirdly, to fill in the scar from the inside out, the production of collagenis stimulated with an intense collagen treatment.

The last portion of the scar and stretch mark removal treatment will smooth out the surface of your scar with an epidermal resurfacing (laser peel). This phase removes a few microns (30-50%) of the epidermis (the dead cells on the top layer of your skin), along with its imperfections, discolorations, fine wrinkles and roughness.

Scar and stretch mark removal usually will take approximately 4-6 treatments in 3-4 week intervals
