Cosmetic Surgery Boom in Women Over 50 | SYS-CON MEDIA
You will be interested to know that international aesthetic cosmetic surgeon LAURENCE KIRWAN has spotted the same trends – and not just in breast surgery! His comments are below.
Describing the developments in cosmetic surgery he is experiencing in the UK, international aesthetic cosmetic surgeon Laurence Kirwan, MD FRCS FACS, says:
”One of the hottest new trends is the aggressive way that women over 50 are doing tummy-tucks. Long thought to be the preserve of mummies wanting make-overs, older women are now tiring of their matronly “bubble tummies” and inability to wear any decent clothes.
”It turns out that women in their 50’s and 60’s do just as well as younger women when it comes to their reactions to this surgery and recovery afterwards, and it makes a significant difference to their core strength and posture. Afterwards, they can buy great looking clothes and get into a swimsuit.
“I just did a tummy-tuck on a 67 year old, combined with a second facelift (I did the first facelift 8 years ago). She spent two days in the hospital and one week later, is doing fantastically well.
“This is by no means the whole story. The same age group is doing rhinoplasties and breast reductions, breast lifts, liposuction arm lifts and thigh lifts.
“These are the ‘baby boomers’ leading a new wave again as they approach late middle age and the ‘greying years’.”
A patient of Prof Kirwan who is in her early 60s had suffered for years with back and neck pain because of her heavy “boobs” and had breast surgery to reduced her breasts from size 34FF to 32E, taking 8oz off each.
She commented: “I am thrilled to bits with the result – I haven’t looked like this since I was a teenager. Having smaller boobs has also given me an extra three inches of shape above my waistline, so I have an altogether more slender silhouette – which is an unexpected additional asset!
“I possibly could have had my surgery on the NHS but there was a long waiting list. I wanted to get on with it – and my husband, who is a retired GP, was wonderfully supportive. He has been, all through.”
Surgical procedure with Professor Laurence Kirwan:
Breast reduction using the inferior pedicle procedure – which means that the connection of the nipple to the breast is maintained to preserve sensation in the nipple. Kirwan used his anchor scar technique. This involves a scar around the nipple with a vertical scar from the areola to the crease under the breast, plus a horizontal scar in the crease itself.
Cost: £6-8,000 for Prof Kirwan’s fee. Additional costs of about £2,500 for the hospital charges and anaesthetist’s fee.
Duration of surgery: almost 4 hours. There was no necessity to have the stitches removed as they absorb by themselves. The patient returned to her normal life within 10 days. She runs a hat hire business, breeds Boxer dogs and has five grandchildren.
