Rhinoplasty: Everything You Wanted To Know About ‘Nose Jobs’ But Were Too Scared To Ask!
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape the nose and is taken from the Latin word Rhino (meaning nose) and plasty (Greek for molding or forming). During the medical procedure the nose will be reshaped for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes by reshaping the cartilage, bone and sometimes the soft tissues of the nose.
The procedure is commonly referred to as a “nose job.” Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It can also restore proper functioning of the nose in the case of injury or abnormalities of the nasal cavities. Rhinoplasty ensures that a patient will be able to breathe through both nostrils. It is not recommended for adolescent girls or boys.
How is Rhinoplasty performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed using one of two techniques:
1) The Open Technique. Incisions are made inside the nostrils and a second incision is made in the fleshy skin between the nostrils.
2) The Closed Technique. Incisions are made inside the nostrils only.
During the surgery, the skin is separated and adjustments are made to the bone and cartilage. Bones may be broken or shaped depending on the patient’s desired result. Remember however, that if bones are broken recovery time will be longer. Cartilage may be trimmed and nasal passages packed and an external splint applied. The packs are removed in 24 hours but the splint is worn for about a week. The operation normally takes 1-2 hours and can be performed under general or local anaesthesia.
Why have the procedure?
Having a nose that causes anxiety, distress, social trauma and low self-esteem because of its size and shape is the most common reason. Sometimes the operation is performed because a nose that is too small limits breathing capacity. Rhinoplasty is also performed to correct deformities and injuries.
Are there any side effects of a nose job?
There will be no visible scars (or any that will not disappear) after rhinoplasty and side effects such as excessive bleeding are rare. The main issue t get right is to ensure that you will like the look of your new nose.
How much does Rhinoplasty cost?
Rhinoplasty surgery costs will vary individual to individual depending on several factors, such as where you live, where the operation is performed and what procedure you go for. Typically it could cost anywhere from £3000 to £5000. Ensure you factor in your surgeon’s qualifications and experience, their track record, company reputation, and aftercare.
