ADVANCES IN BREAST TECHNOLOGY
There was a buzz at the recent aesthetic plastic surgery conference over breast augmentation using autologous fat transfer. This is where fat is gently removed from an area of the body, filtered, cleaned, and inserted in the breast.
Many surgeons are hopeful that lipoaugmentation will be a means of contouring existing breast implants or even a solo breast augmentation procedure. Right now though lipoaugmentation is not widely practiced and not thoroughly studied in clinical trials. Christopher Inglefield, from London Bridge Plastic Surgery, said “Fat transfer for breast enhancement is a promising procedure and has been used extensively for reconstructive purposes. However, the safety of lipoaugmentation in the breast has not been documented.”
